Kolovesi Tour
Kolovesi National Park – One of Finland’s Natural Treasures
Kolovesi National Park is one of Finland’s most valuable protected areas and a highly popular paddling destination. It is one of the few parts of the Saimaa lake system where motorboats are prohibited to preserve the tranquillity of nature. The forests of this wilderness-like archipelago are largely untouched, and ancient rock paintings found in the area tell stories of its prehistoric past. The lake’s water is exceptionally clean, and the fish population is healthy. There is simply no other wilderness paddling destination quite like it in Southern Finland.
Kolovesi is best suited for campers who enjoy nature without needing modern comforts or services. It also makes for a great day-trip destination for families.
Trip Duration
2–4 days.
You can paddle around the entire park in a weekend (approx. 35–60 km).
A full circuit around the park and its main islands, Mäntysalo and Vaajasalo, is only about 35 km, making it ideal for a weekend trip (Fri–Sun). The route can be completed at your own pace using official camping sites.
For a longer trip, you can extend your route from the northern part of Mäntysalo via Koukunpolvi toward Vaaluvirta, loop around Pyylinsaari, and return to Kolovesi via Ruokovirta (total approx. 33.8 km).
If one portage doesn’t bother you, another return option is via Käkötaipale (13.1 km), extending the full route to 70–80 km.
Difficulty Level
The Kolovesi route is EASY and sheltered, with no portages (unless extended). It’s well-suited for families and less experienced paddlers. The trip can be done with either a canoe or a kayak. Strong winds may slow progress.
